Obris Morgan explorer 1 review

Obris Morgan to me is one of those micro brands that are probebley the most successful out of them all , the company has a large following and when ever one of their new models go on sale they are sold out in minutes , i personally have had three in the last few years and the explorer 1 has always been my favourite followed by the obris Morgan aegis , the clinical look of the explorer with the sterile case design and no date has always been a good selling point for the watch

Skeleton Watches

Not sure I have seen many on here, they are very Marmite, but seem to be on sale in considerable numbers.

I only have one, which I bought because it doesn't really look like a skeleton watch, and the specs ( Miyota auto) were good for the price.

Unlike the member recently wondering if his Rotary Skeleton was fake I have had no problems with it.

Are there anymore skeleton watches out their, or opinions on them.

I am guessing there won't be many

Cheers

And only 1 remains

I've now decided to rid my entire collection of all remnants of non-automatic pieces. I just have no respect for quartz, at all. I guess I simply haven't the compassion necessary for loving a disabled child. (Ear muffs @Davey P)

Now don't get me wrong, there have been temporary exceptions along the way, like the Bulova Precisionists/UHF, Seiko mecha-quartz and Seiko solar. Still, even then, they've all come and gone, or are soon going. Shuffled off like the annoying redheaded step children they are.

And, yet, one remains. The one and only that I will never let go of. The one watch that I've had in my collection since I came here, and is now the oldest. It's the only piece I've never thought of letting go of, not even once. And it's quartz!!!

Anyway, here it is, the last standing, one and only quartz piece, against a sea of automatic. It's perfectly balanced, perfectly sized, in both diameter and height! Solar, but no capacitor issue like Seiko's horrible excuse for it.

It'sradio controlled, never needing to have time set, reset or checked. The date window is in the perfect 3 o'clock position with low profile but necessary outlining. The even hour markers only lend to the flawless dial layout, fitting the subdials perfectly within and not overcomplicating.

It utilizes a world timezone quick set system with dual timezone subdial, alarm and more. Did I mention the power reserve? Months!!! Try to touch that kinetic! Oh yeah, 100m water resistant and Sapphire crystal (novel concept, Seiko)!

I will say that I've yet to test the lume on it, but it's not really that kind of watch do I won't hold any poor performance there against it.

So after a busy few days and trying to move into my new office/showroom premises which is not going to plan and Simon@Essex clocks and watches having quite a few of my watches in for repair and service i was running low on watches for when i do get round to moving in. So i decided to take this afternoon off and just walk around the town centre to see what there was to offer i normally walk past cash converters in Warrington but i stopped just to browse through the fashion watches they had to offer and DVD players and other stuff when in the corner of the window my eyes was suddenly attracted towards a pocket watch i had to look twice due to the price and it was marked as not working but i took a gamble and parted with my money came home and with a little oil and a nudge of the balance wheel it sprung into life

After some research turns out it was this model was produced from 1915-1916 as an export model seems to be keeping good time so far but it will be heading off to get cleaned and serviced best £30 i have spent this year so far, I then decided to headed over to some charity shops nothing much to report while i was walking through town i paid a visit to another watch dealer who had bought a box of used watches and other bits and bobs he had a box of old vintage watch straps and being a sucker for vintage straps and myself mainly dealing in vintage watches i offered to buy the box so we agreed on a fair price and off i went on my way home while sorting through the straps tonight and to my surprise hidden away under the straps i found this lovely little Zentra i gave it a wind bang it ticks so today i have spent just under £60 in total and picked up some bargains....i will be adding the 3entra or zentra to my own collection but with regards to the pocket watch and after reading the engraving i am a little unsure of which way to go with it now ....

ZentRa Watches: A Picture Thread and Some Notes

$

Many thanks to Slim2500  for introducing me to this interesting and collectible watch brand in his thread of late yesterday entitled, "2 good finds today and a little unsure !!!!!!", posted in the Watch Discussion section of the Forum.

I have now posted a brief potted history of the ZentRa brand on Slim2500's thread, and I now shall use the rest of this thread to some more examples of Zentra watches, and more directly, bring members' attention to this interesting and collectible brand. There needs to be one correction made here to the history I gave about ZentRa. It would appear that, contrary to former indications, the Swiss-made ZentRa-branded watches from Hamilton were related to the German Zentra company in the sense that they were produced for the ZentRa watch and jewellery outlets owned by the Zentra company. I haven't yet researched ZentRa in full, and it is becoming clear that a fully researches article is needed at some stage in the future. Indeed, the amazing number of photographs available showing not just plain but also more interesting watches leads me to believe that the ZentRa brand in its full history has been greatly underestimated by the Forum in the past as a really collectible brand.

It is my wife's birthday today and I got her a lovely Grovana, gold colour on a tan leather strap, and I got an interchangeable gold bracelet to go with, just what she wanted! I set it to the correct time when I wrapped it, as I like a gifted watch to be wearable out of the box.

She opens it up and the thing isn't working. Hopefully just the battery and of course it isn't one I have in my box... :bash:  But I do have to wonder, how long it has been "on the shelf ''  for it to be flat..?

Arrr!

Omega advertise.....but oh so tastefully.

Watching the box and on came a shot of a lovely watch, panning around the face.  No script, no words other than on the watch.  This faded in the single word “ Omega.”

No mention of anything as sordid as price.

Anyway snapped some new pics tonight and am going to wear all night thru tomorrow, so it still counts. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Not good at lume shots, so this is my best...

Brand pronunciation

Does anybody else sometimes struggle with the pronunciation of some of the more "exotic" brands on the watch scene?

I've often had to search brands on you tube and then watch a review of a certain brand of watch to get the pronunciation correct. Mourice Lacroix and Girard Perregaux are a couple that springs to mind. For a long time I simply referred to Audemars Piguet as "AP" or "Audemars" because I didn't know how to pronounce Piguet.

Even some of the more common brands I found I was miss pronouncing. I always said Tissot, with the emphasis on the T on the end, however I've since learnt it's pronounced "Tisso". Tag Heuer I've always pronounced as it's spelt where as I often see on you tube that people pronounce it Tag HOYER.

Doe's anybody else struggle with this or am I just showing my relative lack of experience in the horology world or maybe showing myself to be an uncultured Yorkshireman.

And Now For Something Completely Different.....

I have always liked the look of some of the watches in the Seiko 'Monster' range and whilst browsing Amazon on Black Friday, my eye was caught by something vaguely similar for silly (i.e. very little) money.  In a fit of Black Friday impulsiveness/madness I couldn't stop the mouse creeping towards the 'Buy Now' button and a few days later found myself in possession of.................a Purple Monster!

AslUCaA.jpg

Yes, OK, it says 'Shark Army' on the dial,  but I'm trying my hardest to ignore that bit. It was bought with the intention of perhaps modding it at some point, if I liked it enough, so hopefully that will soon disappear.

Anyway, first impressions were good: It came in a nice metal tin with English instructions and a FREE dog tag!

byaLbAH.jpg

That's right, a genuine, original Shark Army dog tag.

YaWHcc1.jpg

Who would want to be seen dead wearing said item remains a mystery, but hey, it was FREE!

The claimed specs are:

All stainless steel body....Check; It weighs a TON (almost).

Mineral glass....Check.

Miyota 2315 quartz movement.....Check.

PI4cBaK.jpg

Water resistant to 100m.......Dunno about that and I ain't about to test it. Has a screw back with a seal and another seal in the crown, so possibly.

Case diameter 47mm....Check; its BIG.

Thickness 15mm....Check; it's THICK.

Unidirectional rotating bezel.....Check; Some slop and an odd number of clicks (90), but otherwise nice smooth action.

24mm Nato strap....Check; Nice quality too, but I'm not a Nato fan, which is why it's sporting an old 22mm leather strap. I don't have anything in 24mm.

Lume on hands only.....Check; fairly bright but haven't tested longevity yet.  I won't be able to resist giving it a full a re-lume anyway. That bezel is just crying out for it!

Apart from the bit of play in the bezel, the overall build quality is surprisingly good and I have to say that the Deep Purple colour is growing on me, it has a nice metallic sheen to it that doesn't show up well in photos  - it's certainly different anyway.

The size and weight are the only real negatives for me, but I'm getting used to both and on balance I've decided it's a keeper.

Which is just as well, as it came with a partner.....(did I mention they were cheap?)

hdtCVys.jpg

This one has a nice sandblasted finish to the case, which I like, but I'm not so keen on the dial colour. Still, the advantage of having two is the ability to mix and match:

tMayGJW.jpg

That's better, it looks much nicer with the black dial and I don't understand why they didn't sell that combination.

I can't in all honesty say that the cream/purple combo works quite as well though:

BBBcQ03.jpg

Now that really IS different! :crazy5vh:

Right, I'm off to track down some 24mm straps and decide what to do with them, mod-wise, and how. :hmmm9uh:

Utterly trivial thread.

Anyone wound on a watch to the 31 st already to save winding on to th 1st tomorrow, or worse waiting until after nine and wishing you had.  I hate waking up to the wrong date .  I once woke up two days late, but that was a bang on the head

ive done my favourites
