How Not to Organise Sub Dials
What makes a perfect watch or a watch perfect?
What makes a perfect watch or a watch perfect?
You could argue that it’s the same question, but I am looking at it in two different ways.
1. If you were designing a watch from the ground up, so to speak, what features would you include that would make it perfect in YOUR eyes?
2. Is there a watch out there or even already in your collection that is (or you think would be) perfect for YOU? Thinking scooter's sub and one or two others?
My answer to the first question is that it would have to be marvellously accurate, ultra reliable, capable of performing in all environments, but would still look fantastic on any sort of strap or bracelet for any event. I have no particular thoughts about complications.
My answer to the second question is that I don’t quite have the perfect watch in my collection. I suppose the Speedy comes closest to my perfect all-rounder but is let down slightly by its lower water resistance. And the Tank is not reall an all-rounder, beautiful though it is. A blue dialled VC Overseas or GP Laureato could come close for me.
Case size, dial size, height and bezels?
I am generally known for being a bit sizeist in my watch preferences. However, I am aware that I have been moving towards larger watches over the last year or two. I think that rather than a radical change in tastes, I have come around to appreciating certain elements of watches in different ways. Let me explain…
I have been wondering why is that some watches around 40mm sometimes feel big or look big, whereas some 42mm watches don’t. I know that some people firmly believe it is to do with the lug to lug measurement, but I must say I have never taken much notice of that. No, I have come to realise that for me it is about bezels.
A 40mm dress watch has very little bezel and is usually pretty much all dial. To me those always seem to fill the wrist in a way that makes me less than comfortable. I am much happier with vintage sizes for this type of watch. On the other hand, a 42mm Chronograph like the C70 or the Speedmaster has an external bezel that visually reduces the apparent size of the dial, giving a more balanced appearance. Similar for a Diver like the Mako.
I have also always said that I prefer thin watches. This is certainly true for a dress watch, where 11 or 12 mm just looks too tall. However, it is perfectly acceptable for a Chronoraph or a diver.
Opinions on a postage stamp?
Oh Dear -- Little Collection -- Think I've Run Out Of Steam
Since making your acquaintance 15 weeks ago (in the best traditions of the "third age of WISery") I have been using your advice to help me add (carefully) to my little collection.
So, I now have:
The obligatory (ubiquitous) Rolex as my beater
The obligatory dressy combo for "black tie"
The obligatory chronograph (and the obligatory gold case)
The obligatory "diver"
A pilot (or, at least, a navigator)
An asymmetrical
And, pure elegance
Trouble is, I can't think of anything else I really want. Either I'm not really cut out for WISery or I need to consider a move to stage 5
Not sure this is right way to track down a stolen watch
Someone decided to list their stolen watch on eBay.
(as it was bought there)
No idea why two people have big on it!
The Standard Unit
I have on my “ standard unit” Watch. It is a Watch that tells the time but is “ standard” in every way.
Round, a bezel, a chronograph, a crown, pushers. It is just a Watch , nothing to get excited about, nothing to take exception to

Lets see your “ standard unit “ watches Acceptable but not exceptional in your opinion.
Cheers

What Watches Advertise
In all this hoo ha about Black Friday I have hardly seen a watch advert on the goggle box, everything else including Black Friday plumbing supplies ( really).
The only TV add I have seen was for a Citizen Ladies Watch. Don't watch buyers watch telly? I have had the usual barage of internet offers, usually for watches I have bought in the last six moths ( why is that?)
Anybody seen any watch adverts or has the focus shifted to the interweb?
Cheers
Tissot Outlet Website
I know Tissot are popular on here so thought I would pass on this, seen over on TZ, posted there by member Alansmithee. Some pretty big discounts here. Auto chrono for £381 anyone?

Back from service + a thanks.
Hi all
First I want to thank@simon2 for servicing this, it’s a very special thing being able to talk directly with a watchmaker about your issues, so thanks mate.
Second here we have something a little different. A 1987 Favre Leuba triple date moonphase. Inside is an ETA 2892 with the Dubois Depraz 9000 module. A very pretty piece at around 39mm without crown. The details are gorgeous, it reminds me of an old ships wheel from a pirate type ship with all the brass. Currently gains 3 secs a day on the wrist left crown up will regain which is pretty damn good timekeeping for a 30 year old auto. I can’t tell you much about movement decoration because I haven’t seen inside properly, but what you can see through the caseback is some good touches. Simon has seen it maybe he could tell me as i forgot to ask grade of movement?
Here it is.
Ps yes I know the moonphase complication is wrong but waiting for full moon on 3rd December.
Thanks

Never heard of the brand but bang for buck!
Just landed. . .
After looking around for alternatives to the g10 and not getting on with my momentum I stumbled upon Mondaine.
They just struck a chord with me, even though there is typically no lume. I was then dumbstruck but the sheer number of options available. So I finally settled on this:

Very pleased before anyone points out the date has now been adjusted.
Jay Deep. S.O.B.????
I really think that our American friend, Jay Deep, is a "crazy" Son Of a B........! Look what he dun send me........A Strela
I was looking for an alarm watch a couple of months ago but stopped when I didn't find one that I liked because they were too small for my tastes and had a feeble alarm.
Now, thanks to @JayDeep I have one that's in excellent condition (brand new?) and of a great size. In the correct wooden box, to boot.
I really don't know what else to say. "Chuffed or what?" doesn't really do it. Astounded? Well I'll go to the foot of our stairs?
What a forum
..................What a guy!
Thank you so very much Jay.
Rolex in Skip.......any such luck?
Watching flog it last week a bloke turned up with a 9ct gold Rolex from the 40s found in a SKIP about twenty years ago. The sub dial second hand was loose and so was the crown but otherwise good nick.
He spent 127 quid on it twenty years ago getting it fixed and I believe it went for over 4K.
Have you ever had a lucky find. Nearest I got was a year or two after my old Mum died I found a Raymond Weil in the bottom of her old hand bag.
Any finds anyone

Anyway Blenheim Watches London......Happy Christmas to you
Between what times?
Anyone can give me a virtual ticking off, but Cassie O can't remember what times you are not supposed to change the time on your watch in the evening? I remember it was only in one of my instruction manuals but I don't know which one. Thanks in advance.
Is JayDeep really santa?
Well arrived home late last night after attending a week long military course down south!
Got up this morning and MrsT says "oh a parcel came when you were away"
well to say I was blown away is an understatement, what a fantastic gift from @JayDeep I think he is really Father Christmas!
Thank you once again mate, I love it and will wear it with pride! Now just have to sit and work out what everything is! Now where is that manual!!

despite my skinny girl wrists it wears well.
Thanks again mate for your generosity, I hope you and your loved ones have a great holiday when it comes.
Let’s Do CHUNKY
I had the battery in this changed and I had forgotten how chunky some Precisionist are, so forget elegant........do chunky
Anything less chunky than this Precisionist is Verbotten.
This runs a little fast for a Precisionist......but i willl live with it, and the battery that came out was fifteen months old.......good going for one of these battery munchers
Anything BIG.
Cheers
A Cunning Plan.......and a question.
I have five Komandirskies and two Amphibia but every time I want to wear one I can't be faffed to wind back and forward through the date change. I am beginning to wish I had bought non date models.
Anyway I have arranged them in order of date in a line, earliest date first and so on, that way I can pick one that needs the least date winding . Maybe I'll get to wear one now.
The komandirskie are on the factory not very nice black plastic straps. I would like something different that suits Komandirskies, and that I can get five of without splashing out too many squids.
I'd love to see Amphibia and Komandirskies on after market straps and some info.
Thank You.
